Reliable Internet and a few pieces of equipment are needed to ensure a successful experience. Please review the requirements lists below.
Prior to starting lessons, parents/students must agree to my studio policies. Please review these policies and contact me if you have any questions.
HOW IT WORKS
Online lessons provide a convenient and effective way to receive professional, personalized music instruction from the comfort of your own home.
Online lessons work very similar to in-person lessons. I provide one-on-one live instruction for piano or voice, helping my students select and learn music, listening to their performance, observing their technique — the same as I’ve been doing with students since 1990. I arrange a regular weekly session time with each student. Lessons typically last 30 minutes, though one-hour sessions are also available.
Ready to see if online lessons are right for you? Check out the equipment requirements below, review the studio policies, and then contact me for a free 15 minute trial lesson!
SETUP & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
DEVICE WITH STAND
You will need a device with a webcam, such as a laptop, computer, or tablet. A newer phone may work depending on the model and quality of camera and microphone. Please ensure your device is fully charged or plugged in during your lesson.
You will also need a stand on which to set your device, positioned so that Mary can clearly see you (and your piano, if taking piano lessons). A stool or tall chair may work, or check out some recommended stands and tablet holders.
RELIABLE, HIGH-SPEED INTERNET
Your Internet speed should be at least 5Mbps upload and download. You can measure your speed at speedtest.net.
VIDEO CALLING SOFTWARE
Online lessons will be conducted over Skype or Zoom. You can install and use this software for free on various devices and operating systems. Let Mary know your username prior to the first lesson so you can be added as a contact.
IF TAKING PIANO LESSONS
Obviously you will need your instrument. Your piano or keyboard. Please ensure your instrument is in tune and ready for your lessons.
IF TAKING VOICE LESSONS
You will need accompaniment which can be played on your device or through another device. Mary can help you locate appropriate pre-recorded backing tracks online, or can record them for you once music is selected.
